About

Saluri Rajeswara Rao was an Indian composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and music producer who profoundly influenced Telugu cinema for over five decades. Born in 1922, he was recognized as a child prodigy, performing from the age of four. He received extensive training in Carnatic music from his father, Sanyasi Raju, and Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu, later learning Hindustani music from legends like Kundan Lal Saigal and Pankaj Mullick. His cinematic journey began as an actor in 'Sri Krishna Leelalu' (1935), before making his debut as a music director with 'Jayaprada' (1939). He went on to compose for hundreds of films across Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada languages, including blockbusters like 'Chandralekha', 'Malliswari', 'Patala Bhairavi', 'Missamma', and 'Mayabazar'. He was a prominent figure at Gemini Studios and closely associated with Vijaya Productions, shaping the sound of many iconic films. Rao was celebrated for integrating Indian classical music with innovative foreign influences, popularizing light music, and his mastery over ragas. His legacy includes numerous timeless compositions and a significant impact on South Indian film music, earning him accolades like the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award.
